NYC street art is one of my favorite subjects to photograph, and the following images are mostly from March 2021. In case you’re wondering about the difference between graffiti and street art, here’s how I understand it.
“Graffiti” usually refers to word-based painting on a surface in a public space. On the other hand, street art typically refers to image-based painting on a surface in a public space. Some draw a distinction around legality. Graffiti sometimes refers to work that has been placed without permission. Street art is often painted with permission or as a commission. In reality, the distinction is blurred and unclear.Â
I hope you enjoy this sampling of my NYC street art photos from March of 2021. I am in the process of finding the names of the artists so that I can caption these images. Sometimes that’s easy and sometimes it’s not. Click an image to see it larger.
